The Lion Sleeps Tonight mp3 Audio - Guitar and Penny Whistle

The previous post featured the video of virtuoso Willie van Zyl performing as the penny whistle soloist with the South African Navy Band during the 2002 International Military Tattoo in Bremen, Germany.

Here is a preview of our version of The Lion Sleeps Tonight, featuring yours truly on acoustic guitar and Willie van Zyl on penny whistle :

Originally titled "Mbube" ("Lion" in Zulu), the song was written in the 1920s by Solomon Linda who worked for the South African Gallo Record Company as a cleaner and record packer. The song was eventually recorded in 1939 by Solomon Linda and his group, The Evening Birds.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight was covered internationally and became a number one hit in the U.S. in 1961. The song also achieved international popularity during the middle 1990s after being featured in the Walt Disney film, The Lion King.
